Summer at Ceres
Photos from our gathering, Season 11 submissions, YouTube, and more.
Dear Friends,
Happy June from Ceres!
Two weeks ago, filmmakers, food lovers, booksellers, seed savers, and members of the Ceres community gathered at BEM | books & more for an evening of conversation, drinks, and seed sharing. It was wonderful to reconnect with longtime members of the Ceres community and welcoming new faces into the fold.
We were thrilled to welcome Leigh Ollman of the NYU Seed Library, who shared heirloom seeds from the library’s collection and spoke about the importance of seed saving and biodiversity.
The evening was a reminder of something that sits at the heart of Ceres: food is a gateway into conversations about culture, memory, identity, and the ways people connect with one another.
We are especially grateful to Gabrielle and Danielle Davenport for welcoming us into their beautiful space. Part bookstore, café, and culinary hub, BEM | books & more sits at the intersection of Black food, literature, and culture. If you haven’t visited yet, we encourage you to stop by and explore their incredible collection of Black food writing and cookbooks. You can also relax in their cozy café, admire the Edna Lewis Garden Bed on the patio, and attend one of their many outstanding author talks and culinary events. Be sure to follow them on Instagram at @bembrooklyn.
Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating the close of our Season 10 Festival and the opening of submissions for Season 11!

Ceres on YouTube
We’re bringing conversations around food and our different connections to it online through a series of film releases, filmmaker interviews, and panel discussions. These stories be available year-round, creating new opportunities to engage with the ideas that have shaped Ceres over the past decade.
Throughout the summer, new releases will explore themes including food and identity, migration, memory, labor, climate, and community.
Looking Ahead
Ceres continues to grow beyond the annual festival through screenings, conversations, gatherings, and digital programming throughout the year.
We’ve been busy planning a lineup of exciting events for the months ahead, and look forward to sharing more soon.
Season 11 submissions remain open, and we’re excited to discover the next group of filmmakers whose work will spark meaningful conversations around food and culture.
Warmly,
Maayan and the Ceres Team
